Workshop Abstracts

The ACTFL CEFR Reading and Listening Proficiency Tests

Jupp Möhring, University of Leipzig, Germany

The CEFR Reading and Listening Proficiency Tests (RPT & LPT) are carefully constructed assessments based on the Common European Framework for Languages that evaluate A1 to C1/C2 levels of listening and reading ability. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the development and structure of the tests.

Video Games and Learning: Possible models for future language learning?

Thomas Nolan Kelly and Tony Fitzpatrick

Developments in computer and Internet technologies and in 3D modelling present stimulating, new opportunities for use in language learning and language teaching (LLLT). Many video games produced to date outside the field of LLLT present exciting alternatives for diversifying learning and teaching in the field of foreign language teaching, curriculum design and learner activities.

Within the context of an EU-funded project, “CAMELOT”, the ICC has been working with a European consortium devoted to the production of machinima for language learning and language teaching in a variety of contexts.

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce colleagues to the “world of video gaming”, and to show how the developments mentioned above may be deployed for the enrichment of language learning/teaching in different contexts. Participants will be introduced to various platforms which the speakers feel are appropriate for the task in hand, whilst highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the different programs presented.

This workshop will be presented as a “double pack” starting with “Hands on” experience.
